On 16 September 2020 the project workshop within our project “Cultural knowledge and language competences as a means to develop the 21st century skills“ for adult learners with barriers took place at Ljudska univerza Lendava. The adult learners are participants of the project ZAUPAJ SI – PATJA ANDI TUTE (Trust yourself), which has been carried out within the Operational Programme for the Implementation of the EU Cohesion Policy in the period 2014 – 2020. There are 17 participants in the group. The participants (and our adult learners) are Roma women who will develop different competences and skills to prevent social exclusion and the risk of poverty. They will also try to improve their employability. From this point of view we thought it would be very useful for those women as cultural heritage broadens your mind. And with Roma people having their own cultural heritage they would understand what the project is about. First of all I explained what the project was about. Then I showed them the platform and the modules. I told them that the modules were available in ten languages so that they could choose the language they would like to try. However, we did the first materials together in Slovenian so that they could see what kind of tasks where there to solve. The younger participants did not have problems with using the platform as they had some skills from using smartphones. Older participants were not quite self-confident with using the computer as most of them do not have a computer at home or even if they do, they do not use it. These participants were mainly from smaller Roma villages where they do not have a lot of opportunities to use computers, so it is quite a challenge for them when it comes to using modern technology. Anyway, after we did some reading and vocabulary tasks together, we also watched one video together and did the accompanying tasks. Then they could do modules and tasks on their own. Some of them tried some tasks in Croatian. Before finishing the workshop they filled in the questionnaires. This was, beside the computer, another obstacle for some of the participants. Reading was quite a problem for some of them as they did not have basic education. They did not finish elementary school or did not go to school at all. Still, we managed to fill in the questionnaires and got some feedback. In general, they liked the workshop and found it interesting.
